唔知佢講乜 – disagree with的用法

在香港公開談論英文的人中，古德明是我認為少數英文根底較好的人；他比起那些什麼阿伯，才子，乜Sir之流，好了不知多少倍，當然亦遠勝我這隻肥猩猩。但近年我發覺他教的英文卻有點問題，不是說他的英文不好，而是他教的東西有些值得商榷的地方。像今天的生果報中便出現一例如下：

問：查牛津、朗文詞典，都有 disagree about/on/over的用法，但我跟英國、加拿大朋友通信，他們都說 disagree over the idea（不同意這主意）應改為 disagree with the idea。難道詞典都不正確？
答： Disagree with是「和……不同」、「和某人見解不同」或「不同意某個主意、說法」，例如：（1） His story of the robbery disagrees with those of the other eyewitnesses（他對劫案的描述，和其他目擊證人不同）。（2） I disagree with him/with his idea（我不同意他那個主意）。
Disagree about/on/over不是「不同意某些事或某人的意見、說法等」，而是「就某些事和某某有不同意見或說法」，例如：（1） They disagree over the cause of the accident（在意外事故起因的問題上，他們意見不同）。（2） He disagreed with his wife over their daughter's education（在女兒的教育問題上，他和妻子意見不同）。

我不懷疑古德明是否懂得disagree with的意思，但看了以上的解釋，有誰明白disagree with的真正用法？而甚麼時候我們應該用with，又甚麼時候應該用on或about呢？古德明認為disagree with的意思是「和某人見解不同」，而disagree about/on/over則解作「就某些事和某某有不同意見或說法」。他覺得：

「不同意某些事或某人的意見、說法等」≠「就某些事和某某有不同意見或說法」

看了以上是這位名家的解釋，大家是不是有點傻眼，都在問：他知不知自己在說什麼呀？「和某某」等同於英文的with sb，不一定要顯示出來，那「不同意某個主意、說法」和「就某些事有不同意見或說法」究竟有什麼不同呢？

請恕大猩猩眼拙和魯鈍，但我橫看掂看都看不出這二句說話有些什麼大分別；我認為他只是從不同角度去看同一件事而已。古德明是中英雙語高手，但寫出這樣的解釋卻實在令人有點失望。試問有那個學英文的人看了這種解釋後會懂得如何正確地運用disagree with這句式？

其實報紙上提問的那位讀者問了一條非常好的問題，但答題的人卻答得一團糟。現在由我這個藉藉無聞的肥猩猩用我自己的說話來解釋一下disagree with的用法。我在之前句子分析的網誌中已說過agree with的用法，其實disagree with也是差不多的。簡言之，disagree with可用於下列幾種情況下：

1) 不同意某人 – disagree with sb

2) 水土不服

3) 不贊同某種做法（approve of的反義詞）

e.g. Most people strongly disagree with any cruelty to animals. (MED, p.415)

4) 不同意某種言論，決定或建議*

e.g. I respect the president but disagree with his decision. (Cobuild, p. 434)

e.g. I disagree with the theory that people are naturally lazy. (Times-Chambers Essential English Dictionary, p. 258)

e.g. I profoundly/strongly disagree with the decision that has been made (CALD, p. 397)

e.g. Some people disagree with his argument. (OALD, p. 428)

e.g. Barr strongly disagreed with Kronfeld’s statement. (LDOCE, p. 477)

e.g. He strongly disagreed with what Anne had said. (MED, p. 415)

* Cobuild認為「反對一些建議或行動」這主要是英式用法，所以在美國方面disagree with一般是說不同意某些言論或觀點。

從以上第四點的例句中，我們可以知道disagree with主要是用來表達說話者認為某些言論或決定是不正確的（untrue, wrong, incorrect）或不能接受的。留意第三點和第四點的分別有時並不是那麼明顯，但因為二個意思都是用with，所以這分別並不是十分重要。

那disagree with跟disagree on/about/over sth的分別究竟在那裏呢？其實， disagree on/about/over sth主要是說對某些事有不同的看法（即看法有分歧或不一致），但可能只是程度上或選擇的不同，說話者並不認為這件事是錯或不能接受的。大家可以看看下面這些例句對照一下：

e.g. Most scientists agree there is a risk, but disagree over the exact amount of risk (Cambridge Dictionary of American English, p. 236)

e.g. He disagreed with his parents on most things. (OALD, p. 428)

e.g. Experts disagree on how much the program will cost. (LDOCE, p. 477)

e.g. We disagree about which method to use. (Times-Chambers Essential English Dictionary, p. 258)

e.g. I disagree with her on most political issues. (Times-Chambers Essential English Dictionary, p. 258)

e.g. Scholars disagree about the meaning of the poem. (LDOCE, p. 477)

e.g. We disagree on the best way to raise money. (Merriam-Webster, p. 470)

e.g. Dole and Evans disagree on many aspects of the new policy. (MED, p. 415)

Webster Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged 也有這樣的解說：

a : to differ in opinion : hold discordant views <disagreeing on virtually every topic>

b : to refuse to agree : <by an overwhelming vote the Senate disagreed with the House motion>

根據以上的解釋，我們便能明白為什麼老外會說disagree with the idea，而不是disagree on/about the idea。因為前者的意思是覺得這主意不好，不能接受。相對來說，因為idea只有一個，沒有程度上或細節上的分別，所以你若寫disagree on/about the idea便會予人很怪的感覺。留意老外寫英文不會考慮到以上各點，他們習慣了這些慣用法，這就是學習母語和外語的不同之處。

我常說的自學英文就是這樣從例句中自行推出字詞的真正含義。現在的英語詞典已經非常詳備，但由於文化的差異，有很多字詞的用法在字典中是不會很明確地寫出來的。因為英文是他們的母語關係，外國的lexicographers很多時會誤以為這些是不言而喩的，其中一個例子就是我以前解釋過有關suffer和suffer from的分別。又由於英英字典本身的解釋有限，替英漢字典做翻譯的人自然也得過且過，不求甚解的去進行翻譯，最後引致很多詞彙的翻譯並不準確，如在上二期網誌中我提過有關贊同和贊成的細微分別。可惜的是現在大學的英文學者仍鍾情於一些實用性偏低的文法理論研究（我上星期就中伏買了一本這樣的文法書），而不是加強字詞句式意思的闡述，這對應用語言學的發展是件很可悲的事情！
