豆腐渣工程與鈎小指 - 英語專家的中式英語

學英文的人很多都會聽過中式英語(Chinglish) 這個詞語. 那甚麼是「中式英語」呢? 簡言之就是帶有中文色彩的英語表達方法. 很多人都會將中國人的英語錯誤歸納為中式英語. 但我個人傾向將中式英語的解釋再擴大一點至那些語法正確, 但是用中文思維寫出來的英文. 以英語為母語的人看了或聽了這些英語會覺得很別扭和不自然. 因為這和他們的語言習慣不一樣, 而這些英文也不是地道英語 (idiomatic/natural English).

在這個層面上, 不單是英文差的人會出錯, 很多時一些英文高手也會有失手的時候. 現試舉二例以說明之. 2008年中的四川大地震令「豆腐渣工程」一詞舉世聞名, 有人就問古德明「豆腐渣工程」的英文是甚麽, 古德明回答說:

『「豆腐渣工程」當然是新中國共產黨領導下的特產，西方並沒有，只能 直譯做 tofu engineering 。(例如):

Thanks to tofu engineering, numerous buildings were levelled to the ground in the Szechwan earthquake, while those left standing are near collapse. 』

其實西方是有類似說法的, 他們稱這類建築做 “Jerry-built projects”. 這字的解釋是 “built very quickly and cheaply, without much care for safety or quality (Cobuild, p. 846).” 這是一個informal word, 帶有貶意 (disapproving).

e.g. The place is a bit jerry-built. (Cobuild, p. 846)

在上海日報所編著的新書《Chinese Buzzwords》(2011)* 中也有提及這字詞:

“In Chinese, the term (豆腐渣工程) literally means made of residue left by processing soybean curd. It is an equivalent to “jerry-built” in English. Such projects in China often involve corrupt business people or officials. (p. 54) ”

另外, 又有人問古德明表示協議的「鈎小指」動作的英文怎樣說. 他的答覆是 “to hook one’s little finger with somebody’s”. 這是典型的中式英語, 英美人仕基本上不會這樣直譯, 因為他們本身有更地道的說法. 「鈎小指」的英文是pinky (亦作pinkie) promise; 這是美式的用語. 另一類似的說法是pinky swear或pinky square. 網上百科全書Wikipedia給的解釋是 “two people entwine their pinky fingers to signify that a promise has been made”. 為甚麼用pinky這個字? 因為小指或尾指的英文除了是little finger外. 也可說成pinky finger.

我們再看看英文俚語網站Urban Dictionary給的解釋和例句:

1. The most sacred, serious, vow anyone can ever swear to. If broken, you must suffer some serious consequences. These promises come straight from the heart and are sworn to value.
Also know(n) as a "Pinky-Swear"

e.g. Ashley told me that she pulled the fire alarm. I made a pinky promise to her saying I wouldn't tell a soul.

2. When people make a promise by intertwining their pinkys and then kiss their pinky.

e.g. I pinky promise I won’t cheat on you with your best friend.

由於英語不是我們的母語, 而我們也不是生活在一個英語國家裡. 所以有時難免會對一些較不常用的詞語有所忽略, 這是可以理解的. 因此除非我們將整本英文大字典背了(但這不可能, 我也不鼓勵), 否則在學習的過程中總有一些英文是我們遺漏了的. 對此, 我認為應付的方法還是那一個: 多讀(包括上網)、多聽.
