早前上網看見一個政府網站有這句英文：
The Hong Kong XXX has been resumed normal opening hours.
這句英文是說一間政府機構恢復了正常的開放時間。它有什麼問題？如果你要說一間商店的服務，經過一段時間的停頓後，現在恢復正常，這句英文你要用什麼voice？留意，我問的是voice，而不是tense，像上面的政府機構它就用了passive voice，has been resumed。很多學英文的人都會有一種想法，認為這類安排是由人做出來的，那就是「被安排」囉，公司或機構是死物，它自己是不會自己主動安排的，所以要用被動式。
這想法本來沒錯，但中文有擬人法，英文也有。對於某些動詞來說，一些可能是死物的東西在英文中卻可以成為主語，後接一個動詞，帶出一種動作或狀態，例如我之前說過的動詞belong：
The car belongs to the government.
同樣地，resume這字也可以這樣用，所以上面政府機構這句應改為active voice。不過，我今天的主題並不是要說這些，上面政府的這句英文只是一個引子。我今天想要討論的正是resume這個字。
不知你們有沒有留意，說「恢復正常」，香港人很喜歡用resume normal這詞組，例如：
In view of the latest situation of COVID-19, public services under the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) have resumed normal.
這是香港環保署的英文，這類英文在香港政府的通告中非常普遍，現在這個只是其中一個例子。在香港，很多人喜歡用resumed (to) normal說「恢復正常」，以下是另一個例子：
Brother HK customer service center, customer service hotline and repair service will be resumed to normal and effective from 15th Mar, 2021.
但這是否正確呢？要答這個問題，我們首先要了解normal這個字是屬於那個詞類。
在英文中normal這字主要是一個形容詞，但有時也可以是一個名詞。留意，有一半的學習型字典都沒說normal可以作名詞用，但卻有normal作名詞用時的例句，原因我猜可能是英文中已有normality這字吧！由於normal不是副詞，所以在英文慣用法中你很少會見到英美人士會用resume normal去形容「恢復正常」。配動詞resume時，他們只會將normal當形容詞用，寫resume sth或sth resumes，即resume + normal + noun，如resume normal service/operation等等，例如：
The two countries resumed normal diplomatic relations. (Cobuild)
The “iAM Smart” system has already resumed normal service but a longer queuing time is still needed as the number of people choosing to register through the platform remains high.（一個香港網站）
要說「恢復正常」的英文，外國人會說return to normal (noun)或(get) back to normal。我在電影中也分別聽過外國人說return to normality和return to normalcy（美式用語）：
a return to normalcy after war (Merriam Webster)
以下二本字典都沒說normal是名詞，但卻有相關例句：
Things are back to normal now that we've paid off all our debts.(CALD)
But, after a decent interval, trade relations began to return to normal. (Cobuild)
事實上，return to normal或 (get) back to normal是頗為常見的用法。如果你查Cobuild，你會發覺有超過十句這樣的例句。
另一方面，如果你在Google裡搜索 "resume normal"，你會發現只有281,000個結果，而其中大部份都是香港的。在現今的互聯網只能搜索到二十多萬個結果是很少的數目，因為當中絶大部份的結果都是不相關的。我們再看看COCA語料庫，只找到21句例句，比例同樣非常少，當中所有的例句全部都是resume normal + noun，這證明了單單resume normal這寫法是錯誤的，香港人喜歡這樣用是因為以訛傳訛的緣故！
